On December 29th, 2016, the /r/Tattletail subreddit was launched for discussions about the game. That day, the official trailer for the game was released (shown below). On December 28th, the game was officially released on Steam for Microsoft Windows and Mac OS systems. A Mama Tattletail toy must be avoided, which will attack the player if they make too much noise in the toy's immediate vicinity. The game is set during Christmas in 1998 in a large house, in which the player must take care of a Baby Talking Tattletail toy and complete various objectives before going to bed each night.
